A Will Eternal — Chinese Cultural Concepts (Chapters 171–180)

Posted on 10/04/2026 by admin

A Will Eternal — Cultural Dictionary, Chapters 171–180

What this is: A cultural dictionary for A Will Eternal (一念永恒). Each entry explains an in-world term — a cultivation mechanic, an institution, a social custom, a title, or a cultural reference — and how it works in the world the author built. This is a reference for readers, translators, and worldbuilding enthusiasts; it is not a novel summary or plot recap.

How to use it: Find the term you want (the Chinese characters and pinyin are shown in each heading), read the explanation, and follow the Related terms line to find connected concepts. Entries are grouped in reading order so the dictionary doubles as an unfolding guide to the world.

准传承序列 (ZHǓN CHUÁNCHÉNG XÙLIÈ) — Succession-Line Candidate

Category: Institutional status / political rank

准传承序列 — “quasi-succession-line” or “succession candidate” — is a status invented by the novel to solve a structural problem: a sect wants to identify its future leaders before it can confirm that they will qualify. It is a conditional rank, and understanding the condition tells you almost everything about how the sects of the Lower Reaches actually work.

The full ladder. The 传承序列 (“succession sequence,” sometimes rendered “legacy sequence”) is the list of cultivators a sect has designated as possible future sect-heads or ancestors. It is not a formal office but a queue, and admission to the queue is the single most valuable status a young cultivator can earn. The ladder runs, roughly:

  1. Prodigy (天骄) — a cultivator who has demonstrated exceptional talent. This earns fame and attention but no institutional position.
  2. Recorded disciple (记名弟子) — a semi-formal attachment to a powerful instructor. Many of the cultivators 白小纯 helped across the Foundation Establishment arc received this, plus new elder posts in the peaks.
  3. Quasi-succession-line (准传承序列) — what 白小纯 is granted in this arc, purely on the strength of his being the only Heavenly-Dao Foundation Establishment cultivator of his generation.
  4. Succession line (传承序列) — the actual list. Reaching this is the goal of the entire young generation.
  5. Sect head / ancestor (掌门 / 老祖) — the offices at the top.

Why the word “quasi” carries all the weight. The sect cannot simply declare 白小纯 a member of the succession line, because succession-line status requires 传承 — a legacy, an inherited art, formally received from the sect’s own ancestral store. 白小纯 has not yet walked the 祖禁之地 and taken a legacy. So the sect creates a placeholder rank that says: you are treated as succession-line in every respect except formal investiture, and the investiture is a formality we expect you to complete. In this arc the sect head 郑远东 tells him point-blank: 你是天道筑基,是准传承序列,是我灵溪宗的瑰宝与骄傲 (“You are a Heavenly-Dao Foundation cultivator, a quasi-succession candidate, the treasure and the pride of our Spirit Creek Sect”).

The four gifts that make the rank real. To convert the title into something functional, 郑远东 hands over four jade slips (玉简), and it is worth enumerating them because each one unlocks a different piece of the world:

Jade slip Function Unlocks
Elder token (长老身份令牌) Formal elder rank from this day forward Entry to the sect’s inner governance
New cave dwelling (新洞府) Residence on 种道山, the ancestors’ mountain Access to the ancestral precinct
Legacy-selection credential (祖禁之地选择传承的信物) The right to enter the 祖禁之地 and choose one of the ancestral legacies The forbidden-legacy arc
First secret-realm key (天骄战第一秘境的钥匙) The key to the secret realm won in the Prodigy War The insight-realm arc

The point of the list is that status in this world is always packaged as access. A rank is not a title you display; it is a set of doors that now open for you. This is why the sect can afford to be generous with honorary words and stingy with physical permissions — and why the four slips are the actual promotion.

Why 白小纯 is the exception that proves the rule. He is named quasi-succession-line not because he passed an examination but because of a statistical anomaly: he is the only Heavenly-Dao Foundation cultivator in his sect, and quite possibly in the entire Lower Reaches of the East Vein. The sect-head 郑远东, notably, is sorry about his own position: 他自己是没有可能成为传承序列的了,太上长老,是他的未来所在 (“there was no chance of his becoming succession-line himself; Supreme Elder was where his own future lay”). Supreme Elder (太上长老) is therefore coded in this novel as a consolation prize for the politically powerful but rule-bound — a role for those who serve the succession line without ever being on it.

落陈家族叛变之因 (LUÒCHÉN JIĀZÚ PÀNBIÀN ZHĪ YĪN) — Why the Luochen Clan Rebelled

Category: Historical event / political economy

落陈家族叛变 — “the Luochen Clan’s rebellion” — is a background atrocity that the novel deliberately leaves half-explained for well over a hundred chapters, then resolves with a single sentence. The resolution is a masterclass in retroactive worldbuilding: it converts what looked like clan villainy into an inter-sect proxy war, and it retroactively explains a dozen earlier oddities.

What the reader was told early. The 落陈 family, a subordinate clan within the Spirit Creek Sect’s territory, defected. They did not simply leave — they slaughtered ordinary mortals (肆杀凡俗) and attempted a blood-change reversal (换血逆转), a forbidden procedure. The sect crushed them. 白小纯 nearly died in the campaign, and one image is burned into him permanently: the bone-spur (骨刺) piercing the neck of 陈恒, the Luochen heir.

Why the official story never made sense. The sect suppressed the whole affair, publishing nothing (将一切痕迹都隐藏起来,没有对外公布). 白小纯, after returning, noticed as the years passed that Foundation Establishment cultivators of the sect were being sent out unusually often. He could not explain why a beaten clan’s defeat required a permanent low-grade military presence. He also reasoned, correctly, that pure ambition does not explain the rebellion: 东脉下游修真界 is simultaneously “very large” and “very small,” so a clan that betrayed its sect would remain a marked target for the rest of its existence even if the blood-reversal succeeded.

The actual answer (fourth revelation). The sect head’s fourth question: 落陈家族,为何叛乱! — and the answer is the empty seat.

  • 血溪宗, 灵溪宗, 玄溪宗, 丹溪宗 are all branch-creak sects (支脉溪流宗门) subordinate to the same superior: 空河院.
  • All four dream of promotion — from a creek sect to a river sect (分脉河流宗门).
  • 空河院, for unknown reasons, angered the ancient sect 星空道极宗 and was punished nearly to annihilation: the ancestor dead, the foundation collapsed, the whole institution at its weakest point in history.
  • This means the seat of a distributary-river sect is vacant and can be contested. 星空道极宗 did not appoint any creek sect to fill it.
  • Therefore all four creek sects are now in a four-way blood contest to become the strongest and claim the promotion.

The implication for the Luochen affair. 落陈家族’s backer did not matter — 血溪宗, 玄溪宗, 丹溪宗, or anyone. They were all mutual rivals and all potential allies simultaneously. And then the line that reframes the entire novel to that point:

有人在我灵溪宗内试图养鱼,我灵溪宗一样在其他三宗的势力范围内,也养出了鱼儿。

“Someone was trying to farm fish inside my Spirit Creek Sect; and my Spirit Creek Sect has likewise farmed fish within the territory of the other three sects.”

养鱼 (yǎng yú) — “fish-farming” — is the operational term for the entire hidden-agent system, and it deserves its own mental slot. The metaphor is deliberate and cold: agents are livestock, planted for years, fed, kept alive, and harvested at need. 夜葬 (see below) is a fish someone else farmed. The 落陈 clan was, at minimum, someone’s pond.

The tone shift. The novel pauses to note that 郑远东, who governs the south and north banks even-handedly and is respected by all, is revealed in this moment as entirely different in external matters: 对内如春风,可在对外的时候,他一向是杀伐果断,甚至比豺道人欧阳桀,更加冷酷 — “gentle as a spring breeze internally, but externally always decisive in slaughter, colder even than 欧阳桀 the Jackal Daoist.” The two-faced sect head is a genre convention of xianxia governance, and the novel is explicit that the warmth is a management technique.

通天海与通天界 (TŌNGTIĀN HǍI YǓ TŌNGTIĀN JIÈ) — The Heaven-Piercing Sea and the Heaven-Piercing World

Category: Cosmology / geography

通天界 — “the Heaven-Piercing World” — is the setting’s master map, delivered as the first of the sect head’s four revelations. Before this chapter the reader has seen only a small regional map (the sect, the abyss, the secret realms). After it, every earlier location is repositioned as one leaf on a tree.

The structure, stated plainly. The world is infinitely vast. At its exact center lies a vast golden sea, 通天海, its waves mountainous. At the sea’s center is an island, the entry to the vault of heaven (通往苍穹的入口). So the sea is called the Heaven-Piercing Sea, and the world is called the Heaven-Piercing World / Heaven-Piercing Land (通天界 / 通天大地).

The branching. Four great rivers (大川) run out from the sea in the four compass directions — east, north, south, west — called 通天东脉 / 北脉 / 南脉 / 西脉 (the Heaven-Piercing East / North / South / West Veins). The novel’s narrator flags the ambiguity deliberately: 说不清是四川纳海,还是海散四川 — “you cannot say whether the four rivers feed the sea, or the sea disperses into the four rivers.”

Then a strict recursive fourfold branch:

Tier Term Count per parent
Trunk river 主脉大川 1 per direction
Upper Reaches 上游 = the trunk river itself
Branch river 分脉河流 4 per trunk
Middle Reaches 中游 = the branch rivers
Sub-branch stream 支脉溪流 4 per branch river
Lower Reaches 下游 = the sub-branch streams
Endless terminal streams 末流 4 per sub-branch stream

So the Lower Reaches where 白小纯 lives is the third level of branching — one 支脉溪流 among many — and below it there is still a fourth tier (末流, “terminal streams”) consisting of an unbounded number of tiny sects. 郑远东 gives the image explicitly: 你可以把通天海,看成是一颗大树 — “you may think of the Heaven-Piercing Sea as a great tree.”

Why the tree metaphor matters thematically. This is a hydraulic feudalism: power is not measured by territory but by proximity to water. Which brings us to the second half of the cosmology.

通天河 — the Heaven-Piercing River. Every river, branch, stream and terminal is called a 通天河 collectively. The world is built along these rivers, and the sect head’s third revelation explains why: the world has no spiritual energy of its own.

整个世界,是没有灵气的……天地之间,根本就不产生丝毫灵气,产生的只是一股浑浊之力,对于修士而言是剧毒,对于凶兽来说,却是滋补。

“The whole world has no spiritual energy… between heaven and earth not a trace of it is produced; what is produced is a turbid force, which to cultivators is deadly poison, and to fierce beasts is nourishment.”

All spiritual energy in the world comes from the sea, and flows outward with the rivers. Every drop of the 通天海 contains inexhaustible spiritual energy. Hence:

  • Closer to the sea and to the great rivers = denser spiritual energy = stronger cultivators. 上游极强,中游强悍,下游不俗,末流也有希望 (“the Upper Reaches are extremely strong, the Middle Reaches strong, the Lower Reaches not bad, the terminal streams still have hope”).
  • Farther from water = thinner energy, until at the far end there are energy-dead forbidden zones (没有灵气的禁地).
  • Even with four rivers spreading out, nearly half the world — the interstitial land between the veins — has no spiritual energy at all.

Three consequences the novel draws.

  1. Geography is destiny. A sect’s rank in the four-tier hierarchy is its average cultivator quality. There is no way to escape the ladder except by climbing toward water.
  2. The interstices are a natural moat. Because the land between two veins is energy-dead, wars between the great ancient sects are logistically near-impossible (彼此若征战,难度极大). This is why the current conflicts are internal resource wars within a single vein (各脉内部争夺资源). The dead zones are what make the four-way contest for 空河院’s seat possible — nobody outside the vein can intervene cheaply.
  3. The recurring “no-qi world” motif. Two later revelations in this novel (the sect head’s, and the insight-realm vision) both hinge on the fact that a place can look entirely normal and yet contain zero spiritual energy. The reader should keep the 通天界 map in mind: it means the entire world 白小纯 has so far experienced is a riverbank — a thin habitable strip along an unimaginably long tree of water, surrounded by deserts that kill cultivators.

四宗与溪字之秘 (SÌ ZŌNG YǓ XĪ-ZÌ ZHĪ MÌ) — The Four Sects and the Secret of the Creek Character

Category: Institution / naming convention

四宗 — the Four Sects — are 灵溪宗 (Spirit Creek), 血溪宗 (Blood Creek), 玄溪宗 (Mysterious Creek), and 丹溪宗 (Pill Creek). They are the four strongest sects of the Lower Reaches of the East Vein, and they are mutually, permanently at war. The novel’s second revelation is the smallest of the four questions and the most elegant: why do all four names end in 溪 (creek)?

The answer as political physics. Because all four are 支脉溪流宗门 — “sub-branch stream sects,” the third tier of the tree. The character 溪 is not decorative; it is a rank printed into the name. A sect one tier up would carry 河 (river); a sect at the top would carry no water character at all, being named after the sea (通天海) or its cosmology (星空道极宗).

The lineage under the East Vein:

“`

通天海 (sea, center)

└─ 通天东脉 (East trunk river, UPPER REACHES)

└─ 星空道极宗 (ancient sect of the East Vein, UPPER REACHES)

├─ 星河院

├─ 空河院 ← the four branch-river courts

├─ 道河院

└─ 极河院

└─ 空河院’s four sub-branch streams (LOWER REACHES):

First stream → 血溪宗

Second stream → 灵溪宗

Third stream → 丹溪宗

Fourth stream → 玄溪宗

“`

So 灵溪宗 and 血溪宗 are sister sects — literally adjacent branches off the same river court, 空河院. This is why 白小纯’s mission to infiltrate 血溪宗 is even coherent: they are geographic neighbors and old enemies, not distant strangers.

The four-way rivalry explained by rank, not malice. The four creek sects are not enemies because they hate each other. They are enemies because the promotion slot is singular. When 空河院 fell, exactly one river-court seat opened, and 星空道极宗 declined to fill it. This converts four mutually subordinate institutions into a zero-sum tournament: 血、灵、玄、丹四宗,都有可能,故而彼此要争夺,要血战,要从其他三宗杀出来,成为最强,就可以晋升分脉 (“all four are possible, so they must fight, must wage bloody war, must cut their way out from among the other three and become the strongest — then they may be promoted to a branch river”).

Why the romanization matters for translators. The 溪/河/川/海 sequence is a single coherent water-rank vocabulary, and translators who render 灵溪宗 as “Spirit Stream Sect” and 血溪宗 as “Blood Creek Sect” destroy the symmetry. Pick one: creek / river / trunk / sea. The novel’s whole cosmology depends on the reader hearing the rank in the name.

The “upper sect” relation (上宗). 空河院 is the four sects’ 共同的上宗 — their shared superior. Above it stands 星空道极宗, described as 源头一样的古宗 (“the ancient sect, like the source”). Note the emotional structure: the Lower Reaches sects regard their river court with a mix of vassalage and aspiration, and 星空道极宗 as an unapproachable, world-adjacent power — 只手遮天,似乎与世界同在 (“one hand blotting out the sky, seemingly coeval with the world itself”).

空河院之罚 (KŌNGHÉYUÀN ZHĪ FÁ) — The Punishment of the Void River Court

Category: Historical event / political causality

空河院之罚 — literally “the punishment of the Void River Court” — is an offscreen catastrophe that functions as the novel’s prime mover. It is never shown; the reader learns of it only as a rumor (“因某些未知的原因”) delivered by the sect head, and its cause is never explained in this arc. Its function is purely structural.

What happened. 空河院, one of the four branch-river courts under 星空道极宗 in the East Vein, did something that angered the ancient sect. The punishment was total: 被星空道极宗责罚,近乎灭门,老祖死亡,底蕴崩塌 — “punished by the Starry-Sky Dao-Extreme Sect, nearly exterminated; the ancestor dead; the accumulated foundation collapsed.” And then the operative clause: 前所未有的虚弱,可被取代,等于空出了一个名额 (“weaker than ever before, therefore replaceable — which is to say, a seat has opened”).

Why the novel uses “unknown reasons” deliberately. Because the cause is not the point. The point is the contagion of consequence: an event in the Upper Reaches, involving powers that a Foundation Establishment cultivator can never reach, ripples down three tiers and instantly converts a stable four-sect hierarchy into a killing field. This is the novel’s model of how politics works in a nested hierarchy — catastrophes propagate downward as opportunities for the tier below. Nobody in the Lower Reaches caused the crisis, and nobody can influence it; they can only race to exploit it.

It also sets up a structural rhyme: the same pattern (a distant power’s failure opening a seat) recurs with 星空道极宗 itself across the wider novel. The Lower Reaches is never the story’s ceiling.

暮游 (MÙ YÓU) — “Dusk Wanderer” / The Sect’s Campaign Cultivators

Category: Social practice / institutional duty

The sect head’s aside that 宗门内筑基修士的频繁外出 (“Foundation Establishment cultivators of the sect go out unusually often”) is a small detail with large worldbuilding implications. It tells the reader that a sect is not just an academy but a standing power with ongoing military-administrative commitments: patrolling territory, watching subordinate clans, hunting enemies’ agents, and — as 落陈 showed — putting down proxy rebellions armed by rival sects.

Why the Lower Reaches needs this. The four creek sects are simultaneously rivals and traders. Each maintains a “civilian” territory (the mortal clans, the markets, the lower-tier sects of the 末流). When the 落陈 family was armed and turned, the counter-move was not a war but a long, quiet policing operation. The novel’s word for the rearguard is not given directly, but the pattern of behavior — Foundation Establishment cultivators on indefinite away-missions, public announcement suppressed, evidence destroyed — is the standard xianxia rendering of a counterinsurgency.

The two-faced governor. 郑远东’s characterization in this passage is the entry’s real substance. A respected, seemingly benevolent sect head who balances the North and South banks with a light touch is, externally, 杀伐果断 (“decisive in slaughter”), 比豺道人欧阳桀更加冷酷 (“colder even than the Jackal Daoist Ouyang Jie”). This is the novel’s explicit warning to the reader: internal gentleness and external ruthlessness are not contradictions but the standard professional toolkit of a sect head. The reader who reads 郑远东 as a kindly grandfather for his first 170 chapters is being taught a lesson in the same scene as 白小纯.

The 白小纯 inversion. What makes 白小纯 a comedic protagonist in this world is that he lacks exactly this duality. He is frightened by everything, obsessively self-preserving, and — as the 落陈 memory shows — tormented by the deaths he witnessed. His “revenge” is usually pettier and more personal than the systemic cruelties his elders administer. The novel uses him to measure the institution by contrast.

祖禁之地 (ZǓ JÌN ZHĪ DÌ) — The Ancestral Forbidden Grounds

Category: Sacred site / rite of passage

祖禁之地 — “ancestral forbidden ground” — is the site where a Spirit Creek Sect cultivator, upon completing Foundation Establishment, selects a legacy (传承). It is the physical mechanism by which the sect’s institutional memory is transmitted, and it is the single most important venue in the novel’s early-middle arcs.

The mechanism: a wall of tunnels. The site is, in effect, a hundred-tunnel wall, where each tunnel is the entrance to one legacy (上百个洞口,代表了上百个传承). A cultivator presents his credential, then walks the wall and chooses — or is chosen by — one legacy.

The reaction scale is a status thermometer. This is the entry’s most useful contribution, because the novel makes the response of the tunnels a public, visible, graded signal of the candidate’s worth:

Reaction Candidate Meaning
One tunnel gleams Ordinary case Normal — one legacy finds you acceptable
Twenty-plus tunnels gleam 鬼牙 (Gui Ya) Outstanding — “caused a sensation in the sect” (引起宗门震动)
*All hundred gleam and pull*** 白小纯 (Heavenly-Dao Foundation) Unprecedented — the legacies compete to be chosen

The narrator is careful to explain the mechanism, because it is not magic but measurement: 能让所有传承都如此,只能说明一件事,这白小纯凝气的底蕴之深,已到了匪夷所思的程度 — “if all the legacies behave this way, it can only mean one thing: the depth of this 白小纯’s Qi-Condensation accumulation has reached an inconceivable degree.”

Reading the signal. A legacy, in this system, is not a book that waits. It is an interested party that evaluates candidates and prefers the best one it can get. So the tunnels are the sect’s accumulated ancestral techniques exercising judgment — a decentralized meritocracy of ghosts. The image the novel gives is openly comic: the hundred tunnels fight over 白小纯 like a hundred old monsters each wanting him to pick them (上百个老怪,纷纷抢着要让白小纯选择自己).

The psychological cost of the mechanism. Note how the system functions as status display: the spectacle is visible from 种道山, produces light-pillars into the sky (光柱,冲向云霄), and every disciple can see it. So the legacy-selection is simultaneously a private rite and a public ranking announcement. This is a recurring design principle of the sect — institutional decisions are broadcast as light, so that everyone’s relative worth is common knowledge.

The hidden legacy (隐藏传承). The site’s twist: among its hundred-odd tunnels there is one that is not in the original count. It does not glow with the others; it tears open and outshines them all at once, suppressing their light entirely (如同化作了太阳,瞬间就将四周所有洞口的光,竟全部压制下来), and then simply drags the candidate in. The five ancestors monitoring from the Ninth Mountain note that it is 上百传承中,唯一的……隐藏传承 — “the only hidden legacy among the hundred” — and that it has not opened in a very, very long time (已很久很久,没有开启过了).

Why a “hidden” legacy exists at all. Because a legacy wall that shows its whole inventory is a legacy wall that can be farmed. The hidden legacy is the sect’s insurance: it bypasses choice entirely, and it selects by a criterion the ordinary tunnel-legacies cannot. In 白小纯’s case the criterion appears to be the sheer depth of his Qi-Condensation foundation — the same thing that made all hundred gleam — plus something about his Heavenly-Dao status.

Entry rule reminder: the credential is consumed by entry, and the exit is by credential as well (用身上的信物玉简,离开了石室). The site is not a place you wander.

紫气通天诀 (ZǏ QÌ TŌNGTIĀN JUÉ) — The Purple-Qi Heaven-Piercing Art

Category: Cultivation art / core technique

紫气通天诀 — “Purple-Qi Heaven-Piercing Art,” sometimes “Violet-Aura Heaven-Piercing Formula” — is the only hidden legacy of the Spirit Creek Sect’s ancestral wall, and the single most consequential technique 白小纯 acquires. It is worth studying not because it makes him strong but because it explains the economic logic of the whole cultivation world.

The name as a crux. 白小纯’s immediate reaction is to recognize the two halves of his own sect’s curriculum stitched together:

南岸紫气驭鼎功,北岸通天驭兽法,如今这紫气通天诀,莫非就是灵溪宗……两大功法的完整体?

“The South Bank’s Purple-Qi Cauldron-Commanding Art; the North Bank’s Heaven-Piercing Beast-Commanding Art — is this Purple-Qi Heaven-Piercing Art now the complete form of the Spirit Creek Sect’s two great arts?”

This is a piece of satisfying arc-answering: the sect’s two halves (South = alchemy/artifact culture, North = beast-taming culture, see the earlier dictionary entries) each held a fragment. The hidden legacy is the reconciliation, and it was never taught because nobody qualified.

What it does: it drinks the river. The core mechanic is stated in one line and it is world-shaking within the setting’s own logic: 以通天河水修行 — it cultivates by absorbing the water of the Heaven-Piercing River. Recall the cosmology: all spiritual energy in the world comes only from the Heaven-Piercing Sea and its river system. Every cult at the Lower Reaches borrows that energy indirectly:

Sect Method
灵溪宗 Miscellany — beast, sword, spirit-refining lineages woven together
血溪宗 Converts what it draws into spirit-blood (灵血)
玄溪宗 Uses it to refine a second spirit-body (第二灵身) and to forge artifacts
丹溪宗 Uses it chiefly for pill refinement

And 白小纯’s art? 那不是借用,而是……直接掠夺 — “that is not borrowing; it is direct plunder.” The comparison the novel draws is 如同天地,完全不同 (“as different as heaven from earth”). The other sects stand at the river with a bucket; this technique walks into the river.

The four layers. The art divides into four layers, mapped onto cultivation stages with a sweeping quantitative ladder:

Layer Stage River water required
1 Foundation Establishment, early One drop (一滴)
2 Foundation Establishment, mid One cup (一盅)
3 Foundation Establishment, late One dan / stone measure (一石)
4 Pseudo-Core realm (假丹境) One cauldron (一鼎)

The escalating unit is the joke and the promise at once: the reader is invited to extrapolate to the fantasy 白小纯 indulges in — draining an entire branch river in a breath, then the whole sea. The novel presents this as a daydream and lets it sit there unsaid.

Why one drop is already lethal. Because the water is not water in any ordinary sense: 这河水似浑然一体,没有特殊的手段,不可撼动,而且明显的具备惊人之力,若身体去碰触,瞬间肉身就会融化 — “the river seems a single seamless whole; without special means it cannot be moved at all, and it plainly possesses astonishing force: touch it with your body and your flesh melts instantly.”

The one drop required for the first layer is not obtainable by a Foundation Establishment cultivator at all. It is issued as a sect prize — 宗门内几个老祖,每隔一段时间出手摄取而来,作为奖励之物,赐予给筑基修士修炼所用 (“the ancestors of the sect periodically act personally to draw it out, and bestow it as a reward to Foundation Establishment cultivators for their cultivation”). So the technique is doubly gated: hidden legacy → credential; and first drop → merit prize. The sect giveth and the sect withholdeth.

The initiation imagery. The first-layer absorption is described in the most poetically specific passage of the arc. The cultivator does not drink it; the drop enters through the midbrow (眉心), and the formula’s own mantra is:

河水如星,坠落凡尘,血肉化丝,将星辰高举,身体成为苍穹,使星辰于体内,如在苍穹不落!

“The river water is as a star, falling into the mortal dust; blood and flesh become threads, raising the star on high; let the body become the vault of heaven, so that the star within does not fall, as a star does not fall in the sky.”

The mechanics behind the imagery: the drop, once inside, ignores meridians and flesh, and sinks straight down — melting every meridian, every vein, every organ and bone it passes (所有经脉血肉,全部融化,甚至五脏六腑都受伤). The cultivator’s qi then extrudes from the ruined channels as threads (丝线) and winds around the falling star, layer after layer, breaking and regrowing, until it is caught. It finally comes to rest floating on the first spiritual sea. Then the drop radiates golden light that runs back through the body, healing everything it destroyed and reorganizing it.

The structural payoff: from mob to army. The novel gives the state change in military metaphor, which is the entry’s most important line for understanding why this art is decisive:

之前的白小纯,空有威压,体内筑基之力,是散乱的状态,如同没有主帅的一群各自为战的士兵,而眼下……仿佛是出现了主帅,使得所有灵力,在这一刻,统一起来,战力顿时不同!

“Previously 白小纯 had the pressure of power but his Foundation Establishment strength was scattered — like soldiers each fighting alone with no commander. Now there is a commander; all his spiritual force unifies, and his combat power is instantly different.”

This is a general principle of this novel’s power system worth recording: raw quantity is not power; command structure is. A Heavenly-Dao Foundation cultivator without a cohesive art is a crowd. The Purple-Qi art gives the crowd a general.

The long-tail condition. The first layer is “complete” only when the drop fully dissolves into the first spiritual sea — a process the novel says takes an unspecified long time (当若干岁月后). So the protagonist has unlocked a technique he cannot yet finish, and the reader gets a slow-burning progress meter.

通天法眼 (TŌNGTIĀN FǍ YǍN) — The Heaven-Piercing Dharma Eye

Category: Divine ability / perception technique

通天法眼 — “Heaven-Piercing Dharma Eye,” the “third eye” — is the signature divine ability (神通) generated by the Purple-Qi Heaven-Piercing Art. It deserves its own entry because it is the mechanism by which the novel’s most important perception plot is told, and because its escalation ladder parallels 白小纯’s whole power trajectory.

What it is. A third eye that grows in the midbrow (眉心). Its growth is physically described and uncomfortable: after the first drop settles, 白小纯 feels 阵阵刺痛,这刺痛中还带着痒,似乎在那里,有一只眼睛,正在缓缓生长 (“a stinging that itches — as if an eye were slowly growing there”), creating a strong urge to open it.

The ladder: from qi-command to eye-command. The art’s own description gives the most useful formulation:

一样是驭力,可却明显与凝气时,不是一个境界,凝气以气来驭,筑基以眼,似目光所去,万物皆驭!

“Both are force-command, but plainly not the same realm as during Qi Condensation: Qi Condensation commands with qi; Foundation Establishment commands with the eye — where the gaze goes, all things are commanded.”

This is the same escalation that 白小纯 covets in the 驭人大法 (the art of commanding people) — he immediately recognizes the Dharma Eye as 我所追求的……驭人大法的境界 (“the very realm of the art of commanding people I have been chasing”). So the novel ties three threads together: the crude 驭力 of Qi Condensation, the eye-based 驭 of the Purple-Qi art, and the dream of commanding people.

What the eye actually sees. Its first use is a revelation, and it is the arc’s second cosmology bomb. The eye sees through the mist of the insight-realm and reports the truth:

  • Beyond the grey fog, there is not land but a nearly-dried ocean (一片近乎干枯的海洋).
  • The sect’s mountain gate — the entire 灵溪宗, with all its pavilions and buildings — is a fragment island floating in emptiness (根本就是漂浮在虚无中的碎片岛屿而已).
  • Further out there are countless more such fragment islands.
  • Between and connecting them run faint arc-shaped lightning bolts through the sea (一道道微弱的弧形闪电…连接一处又一处碎片岛屿).

The cost. Using it costs 白小纯 most of his spiritual power (体内灵力损失了大半) and causes the midbrow to bleed and the aperture to snap shut — 眉心刺痛,鲜血流下,裂缝闭合. So the eye is a high-cost diagnostic tool, not a combat ability, for now. This is a consistent pattern in the novel: the perception abilities are rationed by pain.

Why it’s thematically central. Because the novel is fundamentally about layered deceptions — hidden agents, masks, fake identities, suppressed histories, and a world whose true shape is hidden behind an ordinary horizon. The Dharma Eye is the one instrument that reports truth without translation. Its first act is to expose the entire sect as a floating rock in a dead sea, which is precisely the kind of revelation the reader has been primed for by the sect-head’s cosmology lecture two chapters earlier. The two are deliberately twinned: one explanation from an elder, one verification by the protagonist’s own eye.

秘境感悟 (MÌJÌNG GǍNWÙ) — Insight in the Secret Realm

Category: Cultivation resource / institution

秘境感悟 — “insight in the secret realm,” literally “secret-realm comprehension” — is a rationed cultivation resource and the best single illustration of how the sect monetizes its own mystique.

What it is. A secret realm (秘境) whose entrance stands on 种道山 but whose interior exists in a mysterious void (内部却是在一个神秘的虚无中). Inside, according to 白小纯’s experience, his mind becomes 前所未有的清晰 — all thoughts are infinitely amplified, and

任何一个念头,都仿佛可以成为现实!(如同想象一个世界,那么这个世界,就可以出现的感觉)

“any single thought seems able to become reality — as if you imagine a world, and that world can appear.”

Practically, this means comprehension of any art is vastly faster inside: what was opaque outside becomes clear, and the practitioner’s every stray notion is a workable insight. 白小纯 compares the return to the real world as 似乎全身上下,沉入水中,浑浑噩噩 — “as if one’s whole body had sunk into water, dazed and muddy.” The cost of using the realm is therefore not just time but a period of readjustment; the guardian elder advises 静坐数日 (“sit quietly for several days”).

How it is rationed — and the pricing is the point. Access is sold in days, not visits, and it is earned in pieces:

Source Time granted
Prodigy War, first place (天骄战第一) 1 day
Heavenly-Dao Foundation Establishment 3 days
李青候 (Mount Fragrant Cloud peak-head), accumulated 2 days
郑远东 (sect head), personal 2 days
Total 8 days

Two details make this entry valuable. First, time is the currency and the increments are tiny: 白小纯’s immediate reaction is that days are obviously insufficient (他觉得根本就不够感悟所用) — and the narrator confirms the market rate is even finer than days, describing it as 甚至很有可能,是按照时辰来算的 (“quite possibly reckoned in hours“). Contribution points (贡献点) can also buy time, but at rates 白小纯 cannot afford.

Second — and this is the human core of the entry — two of the eight days were donated without 白小纯’s knowledge. 李青候 and 郑远东 each gave two of their own banked days. 白小纯 睁大了眼 (“his eyes went wide”) on being told. So the realm functions as a gift economy among elders and as a way for the institution to invest in chosen juniors invisibly. The sect that rations so harshly also quietly transfers its own allotment upward to the child it has decided to back.

The guardian. The entrance is watched by a Supreme Elder, and his presence alone is intimidating: 这一眼,给了白小纯很大的压力,如同当年凝气时看到筑基强者一样 (“that one glance put great pressure on 白小纯, just as when as a Qi-Condensation cultivator he first saw a Foundation Establishment expert”). Entry itself is a spectacle: the elder points at a boulder, which swells into a ten-plus-zhang stone man, which tears open a fissure in the void with both hands (双手抬起,向着虚无狠狠一撕). Exit is involuntary — the surrounding void collapses into a vortex and swallows the cultivator at the appointed moment (四周的虚无居然自行坍塌……形成了一个漩涡). The realm does not need to be left; it evicts you.

The interior landscape. Inside, 白小纯 finds the sect exactly as he remembers, but lifeless — no people, no vitality — and the Heaven-Piercing River running dry (下方奔流的通天河,居然已枯萎). A grey fog covers everything. He is able to walk to places normally forbidden, such as the summit of 种道山. The realm is best read as a vision of the world with its spiritual energy removed — a direct thematic echo of the sect head’s third revelation (“this world has no qi of its own”). What he is standing inside is, quite possibly, what the world looks like when the river is gone.

不死金刚卷 (BÙSǏ JĪNGĀNG JUǍN) — The Undying Vajra Scroll

Category: Body-refining art / inheritance

不死金刚卷 — “the Undying Vajra Scroll,” also called 不死金刚 — is the second volume of the 不死长生功 (Undying-Longevity Art), granted to 白小纯 years earlier by the tomb-keeper (守陵人). Where volume one trained skin, volume two trains flesh (肉之力). Its structure is the novel’s clearest example of a multiplicative body-refining ladder.

The four bodies. Four tiers, and note that they are not the metal ladder of volume one (iron/bronze/silver/gold) but a bestiary ladder of mythological flesh-forms:

Tier Form Name meaning
1 十象蛮鬼身 Ten-Elephant Savage-Ghost Body
2 十鬼天妖身 Ten-Ghost Heaven-Demon Body
3 十妖修罗身 Ten-Demon Asura Body
4 不死金刚身 Undying Vajra Body

The units. The art’s units are each other:

  • An 象 (elephant) here is not a normal elephant but a primeval giant elephant (远古巨象) — a creature whose bare flesh strength alone equals a present-day early-stage Foundation Establishment cultivator. 白小纯 notes his own 龙象化海经 (Dragon-Elephant Sea-Transforming Scripture) is built on this same unit, and that after mastering his Foundation Establishment his body will be worth roughly one elephant-force.
  • A 蛮鬼 (savage ghost) is, in myth, a thing that can tear a giant elephant apart barehanded — 似鬼非鬼,血肉凶兽 (“part ghost, part not; a beast of blood and flesh”).
  • A 天妖 (heaven-demon) — again mythic — 以肉身之力,叱咤八方的强悍存在,以蛮鬼为食 (“a being that dominates in all directions by flesh-strength alone, and feeds on savage ghosts“).
  • An 修罗 (asura) — 力大无穷,碾压天妖 (“of inexhaustible strength, crushing heaven-demons”).
  • The 不死金刚 (Undying Vajra) is the apex: a thousand times the first tier’s strength (其力量之大,是第一层蛮鬼身的千倍之多).

The multiplicative chain. The art is explicitly a chain of ×10 steps:

“`

1 elephant-force (Foundation Establishment baseline)

×10 → 1 savage-ghost-force (tier 1 complete)

×10 → 1 heaven-demon-force (tier 2 complete)

×10 → 1 asura-force (tier 3 complete)

×10 → Undying Vajra (tier 4 complete)

“`

So completing tier one alone multiplies 白小纯’s current body strength tenfold. The reader should note this compounds with 不死皮 (Undying Skin) from volume one, which is a defensive rather than a strength ladder — the two combine into the novel’s fantasy of the immovable protagonist: 不说真的不死,可却一定是很难死亡 (“not truly undying, but certainly very hard to kill”).

The gate: 元力 cost. The art’s comprehension is easy; the execution is ruinous. The novel’s warning is comic and vivid: 白小纯只是略微修行了一下,他的身体就肉眼可见的急速枯萎,吓的他赶紧停下 — “he cultivated only slightly, and his body visibly withered at speed; frightened, he stopped at once.” His own gloss: 这元力的消耗,也太恐怖了,一不小心我就会变成人干 (“the yuan-force consumption is terrifying — one careless moment and I’ll become a dried-out human husk”). This is the standard xianxia body-refining economy: flesh is bought with a consumable resource, and here that resource is 元力 (yuan-force), replenishable through pills or heavenly treasures (天材地宝). 白小纯’s practical conclusion — 决定以后需要多多炼丹了 (“I’ll have to brew a lot more pills from now on”) — is the reason the character is a genius alchemist in the first place. The art system forces alchemy to be relevant.

The reward technique: 撼山撞 (HÀN SHĀN ZHUÀNG) — “Mountain-Shaking Ram.” Completing the first tier of the Undying Vajra unlocks a secret method the novel rates as more terrifying than 碎喉锁 (the throat-crushing lock, his earlier signature move). The name is self-describing: a body-check that shakes mountains. Note the design pattern: body arts yield physical secret methods; qi arts yield perception abilities. 白小纯’s kit divides cleanly along that line.

The structural role of the 不死长生功. With volume one (skin), volume two (flesh), and the tomb-keeper’s origin still unexplained, the 不死长生功 is the novel’s longest-running inheritance thread. Its name literally contains 不死 (undying) and 长生 (longevity) — the two words the sect head names as the secret at the center of the world (“走过苍穹的入口,可以获得……永恒!也就是……长生”). The reader should treat the art’s existence as a promise that the cosmology and the protagonist’s body are the same question.

长生 (CHÁNGSHĒNG) — Longevity / Immortality

Category: Philosophical goal / plot engine

长生 — literally “long life,” conventionally “immortality” — appears throughout the novel as a slogan, but this arc is where it becomes the protagonist’s explicit, stated life goal for the first time.

The delivery. 郑远东, having answered four questions, presses one more: why do the great powers want to reach the island at the center of the Heaven-Piercing Sea?

传说,走过苍穹的入口,可以获得……永恒!也就是……长生!

“Legend says that passing through the entry to the vault of heaven grants… eternity! That is to say… longevity!”

The reaction is the characterization. The novel does not describe this as a philosophical awakening. It describes it as an explosion: 白小纯一听这句话,整个人头皮都要炸开,眼睛直了,身体强烈的颤抖,呼吸瞬间急促,他这一辈子,从来没有如现在这样,脑海仿佛要爆开,充满了疯狂,满脑子都是长生. (“His scalp felt ready to burst; his eyes went fixed; his body shook violently; his breathing was instantly ragged; never in his life had his mind felt so close to exploding, filled with madness, his head full of nothing but longevity.”)

Why this scene is the arc’s pivot. Immediately before it, 白小纯 has spent half a month in grief over 杜凌菲’s disappearance — unable to enjoy his own Heavenly-Dao Foundation celebration, unable to take pleasure in honor, picking up the sect’s dead in the relic-world and handing their bodies over in a ceremonious hall that falls silent. The sect head’s lecture does three things at once:

  1. It answers the mystery of 杜凌菲 by pointing at a hidden-agent framework (see 养鱼) — 郑远东’s opening line is 香云山,有一个奸细 (“there is a spy on Mount Fragrant Cloud”).
  2. It reframes the grief from a personal betrayal into a system-level phenomenon. 白小纯, working it through in retrospect, realizes 杜凌菲 was 极有可能,是自己离去的 (“extremely likely to have left of her own accord”) — and why, he refuses to think through, because he already has an answer (心中多少,已有答案).
  3. It replaces the loss with an ambition. 郑远东’s deliberate strategy is stated outright: 看到白小纯已从杜凌菲的事情中被转移了思绪,微微一笑,准备再下一剂狠药 (“seeing 白小纯’s thoughts had been diverted from the matter of 杜凌菲, he smiled faintly and prepared to administer another heavy dose”).

The counsel. 郑远东’s parting advice is a piece of genuine xianxia ethics, and it is quoted a great deal by readers: 而想要长生,需要具备走上苍穹的实力,你还小,路还长,不要被路边一时的风景所迷恋,走下去,走出一个……无怨无悔 — “but to attain longevity you need the strength to walk up to the vault of heaven. You are still young; the road is long. Don’t be enamored of a passing scenic spot by the roadside; keep walking, and walk out a life… with no regret.”

The doctrine is the novel’s title. 一念永恒 — A Will Eternal, “One Thought, Eternity.” The novel’s title is exactly the fusion of the two concepts this scene welds together: 一念 (a single thought/will — 白小纯’s resolve) and 永恒 (eternity — the goal at the world’s center). When 白小纯 emerges from his cave at dawn the next day and announces 我白小纯,又回来了 (“I, Bai Xiaochun, am back”), the line marks his conversion from a lucky boy to a man with a thesis.

The distinction 长生 vs 不死. The novel keeps these separate and readers should too. 不死 (undying, not-dying) is the body property, pursued by the 不死长生功. 长生 (longevity/immortality) is the existence property, located geographically at the 通天海 island and pursued by reaching it. The horror lurking under the second is that no one has ever succeeded: 多少年来,无数大能之辈,想要度过这片海,进入岛屿,可至今为止,无人成功 (“for how many years have countless great powers tried to cross that sea to the island — and to this day, not one has succeeded”).

四叶仙草与四色火 (SÌ YÈ XIĀNCǍO YǓ SÌ SÈ HUǑ) — Four-Leaf Immortal Herb and Four-Color Fire

Category: Alchemy material / cultivation resource

四叶仙草 — “four-leaf immortal herb” — is a rare alchemical material whose four-color fire (四色火) is an essential fuel. It appears here as a piece of loot 白小纯 forgot he had, and it functions as a key item that reopens his alchemy storyline.

The rarity ladder. The base plant is the three-leaf immortal herb (三叶仙草). A mutation rate the novel gives exactly: one four-leaf specimen per hundred thousand three-leaf herbs (十万株三叶仙草内,才可以有一株变异,出现第四叶). The fourth leaf causes the plant to emit fire that cycles through four colors.

Why 白小纯, specifically, cares. Because his 龟纹锅 (turtle-pattern cauldron), which appears repeatedly across the novel, needs four-color fire to operate at capacity. He has not used it in a long time — not for lack of desire: 他找遍了宗门,也没有找到四色火,能产生四色火的物品,不多见 (“he had searched the whole sect without finding four-color fire; things that can produce four-color fire are uncommon”).

The economy this illustrates. A generic material in one sect’s hands is a pill-making auxiliary; in 白小纯’s hands it is 至宝 (a supreme treasure) — the same object, priced by the recipe you own. The novel is repeatedly careful about this: value is a function of technique, not of the object. (Contrast the same principle at the meta-level: the four-leaf herb is someone else’s dropped item, harvested in the relic world’s chaos where 白小纯 could not even remember who he killed.)

The provenance detail that pays off. 白小纯 identifies the herb’s owner by an unusual memory: 此人死亡后,似乎化作了一张面具试图逃走 (“after that man died, he seemed to turn into a mask and try to flee”). Which is the trigger for the next entry.

面具 (MIÀNJÙ) — The Mask

Category: Supreme treasure / identity artifact

面具 — “the mask” — is the arc’s best piece of worldbuilding because it makes identity itself a supernatural quantity, and it is the mechanism the novel uses to insert its protagonist into an enemy sect.

What it looks like. After 白小纯 retrieves it, it presents as a flesh-colored mask, thin as a cicada’s wing, extremely soft (肉色的面具,薄如蝉翼不说,柔软非常), and carrying a strand of aura he cannot see through. Its material is unidentified and 让白小纯心惊.

The properties, itemized. These are the mask’s stated rules and they are worth listing carefully, because the novel holds to all of them:

Property Detail
It changes flesh, not appearance 不是简单的易容,而是血肉真正的改变 — not simple makeup; the flesh and blood genuinely change
Reversible The change vanishes when the mask is removed (摘下后这种改变就消失)
Undetectable while worn 几乎无人能察觉端倪 — virtually no one can detect the discrepancy
Hides cultivation level 可以隐藏修为的波动 — it conceals the fluctuation of one’s cultivation base
Hard ceiling for detection Per the mysterious envoy: 大乘境以下,无人能看透 — below the Mahayana realm, nobody can see through it
Destructible only by the river Nothing 白小纯 does damages it; but the 通天河水 can penetrate the mask to destroy any soul hiding inside, while leaving the mask itself unharmed
Preserves the wearer’s soul 可以帮带面具之人,塑魂不散 — it keeps the wearer’s soul from dispersing, which explains how a mere Qi-Condensation cultivator left a lingering spirit at all
Invisibility to the naked eye Once 白小纯 takes it out of the storage pouch, his third eye can see it in his hand, but his ordinary sight and his sense of touch report nothing there (如同这面具不存在)
Will only become 夜葬 It can disguise the wearer as 夜葬 and no one else — it is a single-identity key, not a general-purpose disguise

The hidden mechanism: it dissolves the pouch. The novel’s first great mask sequence is a hunt inside a storage pouch. 白小纯 cannot find the mask by rummaging (找了半天…居然没找到) and concludes 这面具是个了不得的宝贝,居然藏的让我无法发现. Using the Heaven-Piercing Dharma Eye, he sees what has happened: the mask has concealed itself inside the lining of the pouch’s wall and is slowly dissolving it — 正在缓缓的溶解储物袋的壁层,甚至已溶解了大半,似乎再有一段时间,就可以完全溶透,从而神不知鬼不觉的逃出. It is, in other words, a jailbreak in progress. And the detection method is the point: the third eye reports a world in which the pouch no longer exists and all its contents have “decomposed into nothingness” (如同分解一样,全部成为了虚无), with only the crumpled mask visible. The Dharma Eye sees through concealment itself, not through objects.

The response to coercion. 白小纯’s lever is elegant and it is a genuine piece of characterization: he threatens to throw the mask into the Heaven-Piercing River. The mask talks immediately (前辈……有话好说,有话好说啊) — because the river does kill it. Which is why 白小纯 spends the rest of the arc delighted by his own bluff.

The mask’s true function (白小纯’s deduction). After a month of study — including masking small animals and observing them at obsessive length to confirm no harm or hidden cost (确定,戴上面具,不会对身体造成影响,也不会有什么隐晦) — 白小纯 assembles the theory that drives the whole next arc:

这个面具真正的作用,不是隐藏修为与改变样子,而是……开启那扇门的信物,丹药,面具,缺一不可!

“The mask’s real function is not hiding cultivation or changing appearance — it is the token that opens that door! The pill, the mask: neither can be missing!”

And he goes further, deducing that the mysterious sect behind it is deliberately unserious: 他们需要让人知道,他们很努力去试图打开那扇门…可实际上,这个神秘宗门本身不愿意这么做 — “they need it to be known that they are working hard to open that door… but in fact this mysterious sect does not itself wish to do so.” Their conduct is performative compliance — the mask, the agent, and the pill materials were all genuinely provided, but one material was withheld and no follow-up support was ever given, 敷衍了事 (“going through the motions”). This reframing is one of the novel’s neatest reveals: it converts an apparently incompetent villain into an apparently coerced one.

The sensory ambiguity worth noting. 白小纯 notices a puzzle about his own past: 不对,为何我当时在陨剑世界内,能看到这面具? (“wait — why could I see this mask back in the relic world?”). Within the mask’s rules, he should not have been able to. The novel leaves this as an open question tied to the mask’s aura of 永恒 (“eternity”). It is one of several indications that the mask is older and stranger than its current owners understand.

夜葬 (YÈ ZÀNG) — “Night Burial” / The Hidden Seed

Category: Character / agent system

夜葬 — literally “night burial” (to bury the night, or to bury a man at night) — is the mask’s resident soul, a hidden agent of an unnamed power, and the best case study the novel offers on the mechanics and miseries of being a planted operative.

The pun on the name. 白小纯’s reaction is entirely in character: 听到对方的名字,白小纯呆了一下,心里有些不是滋味,对方这名字,在他感觉,实在是太霸气了 — “on hearing the name, 白小纯 was stunned; the name felt to him far too imposing.” His spoken verdict: 名字马马虎虎,不够好听,比我的差了一点 (“the name’s so-so, not euphonious enough — a bit worse than mine”). The novel uses 白小纯’s reflexive envy to keep the tone from becoming grim while delivering genuinely grim material.

The actual story. The soul inside the mask is not the real 夜葬. The real 夜葬 was an outer-sect disciple of the Blood Creek Sect who died — but whose identity was 根正苗红 (“of unimpeachable lineage”), because his ancestors had rendered great service and the sect had promised the family that 夜葬 would be guaranteed inner-sect standing. That promise is what makes the corpse’s name valuable: it is a pre-authorized credential.

The soul now wearing it was a Qi-Condensation third-layer loner (散修) inside Blood Creek Sect’s territory, pursued by enemies and dying, when a mysterious figure saved him and — apparently hurriedly, with no better options (似仓促间没有多余的选择) — gave him the mask, told him to be 夜葬, and implanted a soul-seal (魂禁) to enforce compliance.

The agent’s history and its horrors. The novel gives the operative’s whole arc of disappointments:

  • An initial rise: he really did reach inner-sect status quickly.
  • Then a systemic blockage: 他的身体在修行血溪宗功法时,出现了阻碍,似资质虽好,可却与血修不符 — his talent was fine but incompatible with blood-cultivation, the sect’s whole curriculum. He stalled at Qi-Condensation eighth layer and never advanced.
  • The sect lost interest and moved on (慢慢宗门也就将其忽略).
  • His handler gave him nothing — no further aid through the long years of frustration (那神秘宗门的使者,也没对他有什么助力).
  • He survived by hodgepodge skills: he learned not just alchemy (炼药) but also the sect’s divination art (卜机术), casting his own fortunes — 虽然不太准,可也能蒙中几次,换来好处 (“not very accurate, but he got lucky a few times, and traded the results for benefits”).
  • His entry into the relic world was bought at a heavy price, including personal humiliation (甚至不惜屈身) — because a divination told him he would obtain a heaven-shaking opportunity there (算出自己会在陨剑世界内,获得一场天大的造化).
  • And he did not get it. He was captured by 白小纯 instead.

The handler system, itemized. 夜葬’s testimony gives the novel’s cleanest picture of how a remote power runs a long-range agent:

Appearance Content
First Assignment: replace 夜葬, enter the sect
Second Displeasure at the agent’s too-rapid rise; full disclosure of the mission (acquire the 永恒不灭之物); delivery of pill-refining materials, with one missing (育兽血)
Third Ultimatum before the relic world opened: if you cannot achieve Foundation Establishment, we take back the mask and materials and abandon you as a seed (放弃夜葬这个暗子)

The critical detail: every appearance was a projection (每一次出现都是投影), and even projecting was difficult (似乎就算是投影降临,也都很艰难). So the handler power is geographically remote to the point of near-impotence, which is exactly why its agent-selection was so bad.

养鱼 / 暗子 — the two-agent vocabulary. The novel now has two terms for hidden operatives and they are not synonyms:

  • 暗子 (àn zǐ) — “hidden seed.” A long-term plant with a specific task and a soul-seal; disposable; 夜葬’s self-description when he begs for his life: 我可以作为暗子啊…我从此之后,给你们灵溪宗传递消息 (“I can be your hidden seed — I’ll pass you messages from Blood Creek Sect from now on!”).
  • 养鱼 (yǎng yú) — “fish-farming.” The system, seen from the operator’s side (see the 落陈 entry). 夜葬 is a fish; the mysterious sect is the farmer.

Why 夜葬 is a commentary on the genre. He is the anti-protagonist: same starting position (a mediocre young cultivator with an unusual inheritance), opposite results. Where 白小纯’s cheat items work, 夜葬’s mask makes him permanently incompatible with the only art available to him. Where 白小纯’s elders donate secret-realm days unasked, 夜葬’s handler gives him nothing and threatens to confiscate his only asset. Where 白小纯’s divinations are comic relief, 夜葬’s divination lands him in a pouch. The novel’s use of him is precise: he exists so the reader can see what happens to the protagonist’s type when the world does not arrange itself around him.

永恒不灭之物 (YǑNGHÉNG BÙMIÈ ZHĪ WÙ) — The Thing of Eternal Imperishability

Category: MacGuffin / metaphysical artifact

永恒不灭之物 — “the thing of eternal imperishability,” also called 永恒之物 — is a hidden artifact said to lie inside the Blood Creek Sect, and the mission objective of 夜葬’s mysterious handlers.

The claim.

“The Blood Creek Sect hides a great secret. There is a thing of eternity in there. No one knows what it is — not even the Blood Creek Sect’s ancestors know that their own sect conceals such a heaven-defying thing!”

And the promise: 传说中,获得此物的人,可以触摸永恒不灭的秘密,若能解开,就可以永恒不灭 — “whoever obtains it may touch the secret of eternal imperishability; solve it, and you may become eternally imperishable.”

Why “no one knows” is a real clue, not a bluff. The reader should notice that this is consistent with the rest of the supernatural apparatus: the mask is undetectable below Mahayana; the mask’s aura feels like 永恒 (“eternity”) to 白小纯’s Dharma Eye; the pill has a fifty-percent success rate for any brewer in the world, which is not how chemistry works. All three objects — mask, pill, and the hidden thing — share a family resemblance: they are artifacts that operate by rules nobody in the Lower Reaches understands.

The two-key door (门). The thing is stored behind a gate (大门), and the gate requires a special pill as its key (此门开启的钥匙,是一枚特殊的丹药). Two anomalies about the pill:

  1. Its success rate is fixed at one half, for everyone (无论谁炼制,成功的几率都只有一半). This is a law of the artifact, not a property of the recipe. The novel makes the point that 白小纯 is a master third-tier apothecary and yet the fifty-percent figure holds for him too.
  2. Its materials are each extremely rare (每一个都极为罕见), and gathering even one set is difficult (能凑集一份,已是困难).

The missing ingredient: 育兽血 (yù shòu xuè) — “beast-cultivation blood.” The handler sect assembled almost the entire ingredient list but was missing one item, explained as 育兽血, defined in-text as the blood of a fierce beast born from a 育兽种 (beast-cultivation seed). The novel notes it is nearly extinct and almost impossible to find — 此物对别人来说近乎灭绝,难以寻找 — and then delivers one of the arc’s best jokes: 对白小纯而言……铁蛋就是育兽…… (“but for 白小纯… Tie Dan is a beast-cultivation [creature]…”). His beloved pig is literally the unobtainable reagent.

So 白小纯 holds, simultaneously and without having sought any of them: the mask (key), the pill recipe and materials (key), and the missing blood (key). The phrase the novel uses when he finishes the pill is 一切为了长生,为了有去往通天海的资格 (“everything for longevity, for the qualification to reach the Heaven-Piercing Sea”) — and the chapter title is 莫非是天意…… (“Could this be the will of heaven…?”). The novel is openly winking at its own coincidence-machinery.

The deduction that reframes the villains. 白小纯, working through the anomalies, reaches the conclusion quoted in the 面具 entry: the mysterious sect does not actually want the door opened. Their whole apparatus — mask, seed, ingredients, staged “disclosures” — is designed to be seen making an effort while guaranteeing failure (they withheld one ingredient and never assisted the agent). His summary of the sect’s attitude: 似乎……这个神秘宗门,压根就没想过夜葬得到永恒不灭之物后会怎么做 (“it seems… this mysterious sect never once considered what 夜葬 would do after obtaining the thing”). He speculates the sect may itself be unable to act directly — 与血溪宗距离太远太远,且有未知的阻碍,故而难以直接从血溪宗掠夺永恒不灭之物 (“too far from Blood Creek Sect, with unknown obstructions; it cannot directly plunder the thing”).

An alternate reading the novel keeps alive. 白小纯 offers a second theory as well: maybe the sect simply never believed 夜葬 could succeed — and if so, why choose him? 可若不认为夜葬能获得,换一个人做暗子不就可以了…… (“but if they didn’t believe he could obtain it, wouldn’t they just pick someone else?”). The novel leaves both doors open.

Where it sits in the cosmology. Stack the three “eternity” concepts:

Concept Where it lives How pursued
长生 (longevity) The island at the center of the 通天海 By strength: 走上苍穹的实力
永恒不灭之物 Hidden inside 血溪宗 By a mask, a pill, and a door
面具 (the mask) In 白小纯’s storage pouch Already obtained — and its aura reads as 永恒

The reader should treat the third line as the novel’s private joke and, likely, its private truth: the protagonist has been carrying a piece of eternity in his pocket since before he knew what to look for. The line that fixes this is 白小纯’s own: 这气息,就是永恒的存在! (“this aura is the existence of eternity!”). Which is why the arc’s closing beat — 白小纯 sitting there with a finished pill, a working mask, and the world’s only beast-blood donor, deciding whether to walk into the most dangerous sect in the Lower Reaches — is not a coincidence but a designed fate, and the novel says so in the chapter title.

大乘境 (DÀCHÉNG JÌNG) — The Mahayana Realm

Category: Cultivation realm / meta-scale term

大乘境 — “Mahayana realm” — is mentioned exactly once in this arc, in the mouth of a foreign envoy, and its function is more important than its content.

The mention. Describing the mask’s limits, the mysterious envoy says: 大乘境以下,无人能看透这面具 — “below the Mahayana realm, nobody can see through this mask.” And 夜葬, the narrator notes, does not know what the Mahayana realm is (不过夜葬不知道什么是大乘境).

Why the novel includes an unknown term. This is a standard and effective technique in long cultivation series, and worth flagging for readers: the author plants a realm name above the current horizon in the mouth of an offworld character, so that the reader understands two things at once:

  1. The world is larger than the current arc’s power ceiling. 白小纯 is a Foundation Establishment cultivator; the top of the known ladder is 金丹 (Golden Core), and 假丹 (pseudo-core) is one of the four tiers of his new art. Mahayana is not on the ladder he can see — it is the envoy’s own altitude, i.e. a standard from outside the Lower Reaches entirely.
  2. The mask’s protection is calibrated to a power scale 白小纯 cannot yet imagine, which retroactively makes the mask safe to use as an infiltration tool for a very long time — and also warns the reader that the mask’s owners operate at a level where a Foundation Establishment sect is not even a concern.

The narrative use of the joke. 白小纯’s reaction is the same as the reader’s: 白小纯迟疑,也也不知道大乘境是什么境界,可听起来似乎很厉害的样子 (“he hesitated; he too did not know what realm Mahayana was, but it sounded impressive”). The novel regularly uses 白小纯’s ignorance as the reader’s ignorance, which is why the information is allowed to sit there unexplained.

铁蛋 (TIĚ DÀN) — Tie Dan

Category: Character / companion beast

铁蛋 — literally “Iron Egg” — is 白小纯’s beast companion, and in this arc he acquires an unexpected structural importance: he becomes the solution to an impossible ingredient problem.

The two roles in this arc.

  1. The emotional mirror. During 白小纯’s half-month of grief over 杜凌菲, 铁蛋 comes running from the North Bank — 似乎知道白小纯心情低沉,它趴在白小纯身边,默默地陪伴 (“as if knowing his mood was low, it lay beside him in silent company”). The novel gives a small catalogue of those who come to sit with him: 张大胖 (Zhang the Fatty) sighing, 侯云飞 in shared silence, 侯小妹 with the pointed reminder that she is still here (没有了杜凌菲,还有她侯小妹呢 — “if 杜凌菲 is gone, there’s still this 侯小妹!”), and 铁蛋. The beast is placed in the same emotional register as the human friends.
  1. The reagent. As established in the 永恒不灭之物 entry, 铁蛋 — a beast born of a 育兽种 — makes his blood the 育兽血 required for the door-opening pill, the one material the mysterious sect could not obtain. The novel’s note that he is the missing item (铁蛋就是育兽) is delivered flatly, as a comic beat.

The cost, and 白小纯’s response. The extraction scene is written to make the reader wince: 白小纯心痛的取了一点血,赶紧给铁蛋喂了大量的丹药 — “aching, 白小纯 drew a little blood, then hurriedly fed 铁蛋 a large quantity of pills.” His “I’m sorry” is delivered by pill-feeding. The characterization works because 白小纯, the greediest character in the novel, is made uncomfortable by this. It is a small moment and one of the novel’s better ones.

Why 铁蛋 matters structurally. He is the novel’s proof of the principle stated in the 四叶仙草 entry: value is a function of technique. A pig is a pig until you own the recipe that calls for the world’s rarest blood — at which point the pig is the key to eternity. Across the whole novel, 铁蛋 keeps being that kind of object: useless-looking, then suddenly load-bearing.

元磁与元磁珠 (YUÁN CÍ YǓ YUÁN CÍ ZHŪ) — Yuan-Magnetism and the Yuan-Magnet Bead

Category: Force lore / artifact

元磁 — “yuan-magnetism,” a primordial or elemental magnetism — is a speculative force system that the novel seeds in this arc and pays off much later. It is one of the setting’s most interesting because it is not qi.

The origin. 白小纯 trades for the 元磁珠 (yuan-magnet bead) from a North Bank peak-head, an old woman of 鸢尾峰 (Iris Peak), as part of the price for a beast-in-heat pill formula (发情丹方) — a characteristically 白小纯 exchange. She tells him that with luck, he may comprehend from the bead and the accompanying wing (元磁翅, which he wears on his back) a secret method of repulsion and attraction related to magnetism (与磁力有关的斥引神通).

The unit of the force. The novel describes the primal pair as 斥力引力 (repulsive force / attractive force) — 既相互排斥,又相互吸引的奇异之力 (“a strange force that mutually repels and mutually attracts”). These are treated as the two poles of one thing, inseparable in raw form.

What 白小纯 actually achieves (and why the partial result is the interesting part). He cannot separate them. Instead, using his remaining insight-realm time, he filters from the wing a single thread of the dual force and shapes it in his palm into a distorted bead:

  • The bead appears illusory/insubstantial (似虚幻) but distorts the surrounding void (能影响四周虚无,形成扭曲).
  • Any qi he pours into it vanishes like a stone into the sea — absorbed, not lost.
  • But when he scatters the bead, all that stored qi erupts at once (一瞬间就爆发出来,形成轰鸣).
  • The self-containment is the key property: 具备某种平衡,如同一个循环,形成了容器 — “it possesses a certain equilibrium, like a cycle; it forms a container.”

The homework the novel leaves. 白小纯’s own diagnosis: 可却无法将蕴含在内的斥力引力单独剥离出来,未来若能做到,那么自己就可以触摸元磁之力 — “if in the future I can separate the repulsion from the attraction, then I may touch the power of yuan-magnetism.” So the bead is a loaded spring with the safety still on: it can store until the mechanism for selectively releasing one pole is found.

Why this entry is worth keeping. Three reasons.

  1. It is a non-qi power channel. Everything else in 白小纯’s kit — 灵海, 潮汐, 紫气, 不死皮 — runs on spiritual energy in some form. Yuan-magnetism is a separate physics, which is why it can be studied inside the insight-realm by a cultivator with no qi at all (the realm’s world is energy-dead).
  2. It models the novel’s approach to research. 白小纯 does not master it. He produces a partial, useless-in-combat prototype and files it away, noting that time was insufficient (可惜了,若是能在这里更久一些,我一定可以研究出剥离的方法). The protagonist’s growth includes genuine, unfinished science.
  3. The insight-realm’s amplification shows. He did this by manipulating a hallucination-grade insight (“any thought can become reality”). Which raises the question the novel quietly leaves: how much of what he achieved is real, and how much was the realm’s amplification? The design is deliberate — the bead’s effect is zero for absorbing and total for releasing, i.e. it behaves like a memory of a container. Whether it survives outside the realm is exactly the kind of question the novel will answer later.

水泽国度 (SHUǏ ZÉ GUÓDÙ) — The Water-Marsh Kingdom

Category: Divine ability / domain technique

水泽国度 — “Water-Marsh Kingdom,” sometimes “Domain of Water and Marsh” — is one of 白小纯’s own developed divine abilities, referenced in this arc only as something he spends his last four hours of insight-realm time refining (用这余下的四个时辰,去感悟自己的水泽国度).

Why the novel mentions it at all. Because it establishes priority, which is subtle characterization. When told he has three days left, 白小纯 allocates time as follows: beast-ish body art (不死金刚, ~a little, then forced to stop by yuan-force drain) → 元磁 research (most of three days) → 水泽国度 (final four hours). He gives his signature ability the leftovers. That is exactly the priority order of a character whose defining trait is acquisition greed: he spends the rare resource on the thing he does not have, and only at the end returns to polish what he already owns.

The realm’s nature (from context). The name and the four-hour treatment suggest a terrain/domain projection: a water-and-marsh environment manifested around the user, consistent with 白小纯’s water-aligned cultivation (the 灵溪 tradition, the 水泽 imagery). Domain abilities in this novel are area-control arts — a personal battlefield whose rules are the user’s — so the entry’s takeaway is that by this point in the story 白小纯 possesses at least one ability that changes the ground itself, not just his own body. It is worth noting for readers because the arc is heavy on acquisition (three new legacies, a mask, a pill) and light on use; the one time he chooses to train, he chooses this.

The readjustment cost. After leaving the realm, 白小纯 finds even thinking hard: 一切恢复到了曾经的样子,让他有种似乎全身上下,沉入水中,浑浑噩噩之感 (“everything reverted to how it had been, giving him the feeling of having sunk into water, muddled and dull”). Note the accidental imagery — the boy with a water-domain ability describes the ordinary world as being underwater. The novel does this kind of sly phrasing often.

卜机术 (BǓ JĪ SHÙ) — Divination of the Mechanism

Category: Practical art / folk technique

卜机术 — “divination of the mechanism,” i.e. casting fortunes to read the machinery of fate — is a low-status, unglamorous, surprisingly useful art, introduced through 夜葬’s biography and worth recording because it embodies a recurring theme.

Who practices it and why. 夜葬 learned it not as a spiritual pursuit but as survival: 为了在宗门生存,所学驳杂,不但学了炼药,更是学了宗门的卜机术,经常给自己占卜,虽然不太准,可也能蒙中几次,换来好处,方便修行 (“to survive in the sect he learned a scattered mix — not only alchemy but the sect’s divination art — and he often cast his own fortunes; not very accurate, but he got it right a few times, and traded the results for benefits to make cultivation easier”).

The three-part characterization of the art in this passage.

  1. It is unreliable (不太准) — accuracy is not guaranteed, and the practitioner says so.
  2. *It is a tradeable resource (换来好处) — the value is not in knowing the future but in selling the appearance of knowing it* to people who want reassurance.
  3. It works often enough to be worth doing (也能蒙中几次) — a hit rate usable for career advancement, not prophecy.

The plot consequence, which is a joke with teeth. 夜葬’s one big divination told him he would 获得一场天大的造化 (“obtain a heaven-shaking fortune”) in the relic world. He did not believe it, cast it many more times, confirmed it, paid a heavy price including humiliation to get a slot — and got captured by 白小纯, had his mask stolen, and spent the arc in a jade box. The divination was arguably correct: the 造化 he obtained was not riches but survival and a new patron. The novel leaves the irony bare.

Why the art is thematically important for the setting. A world with functional divination has a specific texture, and this novel uses it consistently: fate is consultable but not legible. Divination produces truths phrased so loosely that they are only interpretable in hindsight, and the value of the practice is therefore social — it lets the powerless convert uncertainty into negotiating leverage. Note that the sect has the art as a formal curriculum item (宗门的卜机术) but assigns it no prestige. That ranking tells you what Blood Creek Sect values: blood, flesh, and force.

天骄名单 (TIĀNJIĀO MÍNGDĀN) — The Prodigy Roster

Category: Social institution / information network

天骄名单 — “the prodigy roster” — is a recurring device the novel uses to keep the world populated with rivals even when the protagonist is offstage. This arc is where it becomes a formal object: 许宝财, the sect’s living rumor-mill, compiles one.

How it is assembled. 许宝财 gathers the reports of disciples returning from the three Foundation Establishment holy lands (三大筑基圣地) and 整理出了一个较为全面的,四大宗的天骄名单 — “compiled a fairly comprehensive prodigy roster of the four great sects.”

Why this matters as a worldbuilding mechanism. It confirms that the sects of the Lower Reaches form a single competitive information sphere: news of who has broken through, how many tides they opened, who they killed, crosses sect boundaries quickly. A prodigy’s reputation is not local. This is why 白小纯’s relic-world killing spree (击败八百年前无极子的一幕, a feat exceeding even what the Limitless One achieved 800 years earlier) makes his name travel the entire Lower Reaches of the East Vein, and why the other sects will regard him as a “black horse” — indeed the strongest, being a Heavenly-Dao Foundation cultivator (四大宗门在这一次圣地筑基前,都各有隐藏,使得这一次黑马频频出现,白师叔估计也会被其他三宗认为是黑马,而且还是最强的……天道筑基!).

The notorious names this arc adds. The novel uses the roster to establish three rivals that will matter for hundreds of chapters:

Name Sect Notable
林墓 (Lín Mù, “tomb”) 丹溪宗 Mastered 古丹种道诀, the sect’s first-great art; secretly planted his Dao in many of his own sect’s disciples (有不少都被此人暗中种道) and thereby reached earth-vein, eighth tide Foundation Establishment. The dark horse of the 灵窟 holy land.
The masked woman 血溪宗 Wears a mask with a plum blossom (面具上有一朵梅花). Nearly swept the 一幽 secret realm. She is the Blood Creek Sect’s second person since 无极子 to open the nine-fold peak earth-vein tide (继无极子后,第二个开启了九次地脉巅峰潮汐之辈). Kills without limit; nicknamed 血梅魔女 (“Blood Plum Witch”) — elsewhere 血梅少主.
鬼牙 (Gui Ya) 灵溪宗 This arc’s benchmark: twenty-plus legacy tunnels lit for him at the 祖禁之地 — the feat 白小纯 then obliterates by lighting all hundred.

The roster also records the second-tier generation of 白小纯’s own cohort — 周心琪, 吕天磊, 公孙云, 徐嵩 and others all achieving earth-vein Foundation Establishment, but at most six tides (最多的,也只是六次潮汐). This is the quantitative context that makes 白小纯’s nine-tide-plus-Heavenly-Dao combination absurd: the ordinary strong are six, the legend is nine, he is off the chart.

The “hidden card” convention (隐藏). Note the framing: 四大宗门在这一次圣地筑基前,都各有隐藏 (“before this holy-land Foundation Establishment, all four sects had their own hidden cards”). The novel treats a sect’s strength as partly secret by design — an institution’s true roster is never public, and the purpose of the three holy lands is arguably to force every sect’s hand at once. The prodigy roster is therefore always somewhat wrong, and the arc’s structure is a series of surprises about who was hiding whom.

尸峰之赏与贡献点 (SHĪ FĒNG ZHĪ SHǍNG YǓ GÒNGXIÀN DIǍN) — Peak Rewards and Contribution Points

Category: Institutional economy

贡献点 — “contribution points” — is the sect’s internal currency, and the way the novel handles it is a small lesson in institutional design.

The two-track economy. A disciple’s worth is measured on two ledgers:

Currency What it is Earned by
灵石 (spirit stones) Hard, portable wealth; the universal external money Trade, loot, rewards, missions
贡献点 (contribution points) Institution-internal credit; cannot be exported Service to the sect: tasks, kills, trials, sect business

The distinction matters because the two are not freely convertible, and different goods are priced in different currencies. Note that when 白小纯 considers buying extra insight-realm time, the price is quoted in contribution points (用贡献点也可以换取进入秘境的时间), and his assessment is that 以白小纯的贡献点,也都觉得换不了多少时辰 (“even with his contribution points, he felt he couldn’t buy many hours”). So the sect’s most valuable resources are ring-fenced behind internal credit — deliberately unavailable to the merely rich. This is exactly how a real institution captures its members’ labor: the things you want most are priced in the currency only the institution issues.

The reward package. When 白小纯’s service is recognized, the reward is a pair, not a single payment: 5,000 spirit stones plus 30,000 contribution points. The dual structure means the sect pays him once in freedom (stones — spendable anywhere, including outside the sect) and once in loyalty (points — spendable only here). Readers tracking the novel’s economy should watch these two numbers move in parallel: the ratio is itself a policy signal.

Why “赏” (reward) rather than “wage.” The novel’s vocabulary is feudal throughout: rewards are granted at a superior’s discretion (赐予, 赏), not earned by contract, and their size communicates political favor as much as labor value. Note the parallel case established earlier in the sect: the one drop of Heaven-Piercing River water required to start the Purple-Qi art is not for sale at any price — it is 作为奖励之物,赐予给筑基修士修炼所用 (“bestowed as a reward to Foundation Establishment cultivators for cultivation”). And there, perversely, the arc’s most powerful technique is gated behind a gift. The whole economy runs on patronage, and the chapter title’s blunt 尸峰有赏 (“Corpse Peak has a reward”) is the genre’s native phrasing for it.
